Crash Course in Classical Music for Arts Society Havering

05/11/2019
10:00to15:00

The Arts Society Havering have invited me to deliver my Crash Course in Classical Music at New Windmill Hall, Upminster. The event details are here, and below:

This course covers three hundred years of great classical music, from the first  opera still to be performed today, Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo (1607), through to the work that perhaps more than any other signalled the start of modernism, the ballet The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky (1913). Progressing through the, Classical and Romantic eras, Sandy discusses what role music played in each, and illustrates how composers went about the process of shaping their works. A  glossary of key terms and list of essential elements of each era is provided, along with a playlist with details of the musical illustrations used.

This week sees me embarking on a mini-tour, talking about Bach’s Christmas Oratorio to four Arts Societies across the country:

Monday 9th December, 1:30 pm: Arts Society Ayrshire

Tuesday 10th December, 11:00 am: Arts Society Dumfries & Galloway

Wednesday 11th December, 10:45 am: Arts Society Basingstoke

Thursday 12th December, 8:00 pm: Arts Society Dulwich

Here’s a description of the lecture:

“Celebrate, rejoice, rise up!”: Johann Sebastian Bach’s glorious Christmas Oratorio

Sandy Burnett’s close relationship with Bach’s music stretches back for decades; between 1997 and 2010 he directed a complete cycle of Bach’s sacred cantatas in West London. In this illustrated talk he explores how Bach brings the Christmas story alive in his Weihnachtsoratorium or Christmas Oratorio, written for Lutheran congregations in 1730s Leipzig. An overview of Bach’s life and achievement precedes a close look at this magnificent work which draws on various forms ranging from recitative, arioso, aria, chorale, and instrumental sinfonia through to full-blown choruses which are infused with the joyous spirit of the dance.
