A Victorian Obsession: An Evening of Music at Leighton House

12/02/2015
19:00to21:30

To accompany A Victorian Obsession, a major new exhibition at Leighton House, we’ve devised a musical feast that celebrates the extraordinary paintings on display. Tenor Richard Edgar-Wilson with violinist Kathryn Parry and pianist Juliet Edwards will weave a tapestry of musical delights under the stewardship of compere Sandy Burnett that will include an aria from Cavalli’s unpublished opera Eliogabalo and music by Mendelssohn, Elgar, Brahms and Debussy inspired by the same poets and poetry that so affected the Victorian artists. The concert will feature the magical Lark Ascending in Vaughan Williams’ original version for violin and piano.

a “Music” at Leighton House

During the 1880s and 1890s, Leighton’s ‘musics’ as they became known were a high point of the London social and cultural calendar. They were effectively salons, combining music and art within a beautiful setting, namely Lord Leighton’s own studio on the edge of Holland Park in Kensington. Every spring/early summer I curate and present a present-day concert at Leighton House, inspired by the wonderful repertoire and great artists that took part in the ‘musics’ in Lord Leighton’s day.

The excellent line-up features the tenor Richard Edgar-Wilson, violinist Kathryn Parry and pianist Juliet Edwards at the piano. The programme includes the Debussy Violin Sonata and songs by Thomas Arne, Schubert and Howard Blake.  Leighton House Museum is at 12 Holland Park Road, London W14 8LZ. Here I am talking about a previous incarnation – the repertoire is different, but the lineup is the same…
